World of Warcraft: Shadowlands is the eighth expansion pack for the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) World of Warcraft, following Battle for Azeroth. It was announced and made available for preorder at BlizzCon on November 1, 2019. It is scheduled for a 2020 release.

The expansion will open up the Shadowlands, the realm of the dead in Warcraft lore. It will feature the game’s first “level squish” and a completely overhauled leveling system, access to the Death Knight class for the races that did not previously have access to it, Covenants in the new zones, and initially new 9 dungeons and 1 final raid.


Sylvanas- Shadowlands

The dark lady’s Conspiracy is revealed, her quest for farming lives and warmongering has failed. With the greatest sacrifice made by Saurfang the Elder, Supreme Commander of the Might of Kalimdor, Sylvanas had no choice but to flee the scene.

In recent years, the machine of death has broken, and souls brought to the Shadowlands no longer go through The Arbiter, instead being sent straight to The Maw. As a result of this, The Maw and its Jailer have grown far stronger, while the other domains of the Shadowlands are becoming deprived of Anima, a fundamental resource in the Shadowlands. Sylvanas Windrunner has been working with the Jailer for a long time to inflict as much death as they can, and with each death and soul sent to The Maw, her and The Jailer grow stronger. Many innocent souls, including the thousands of civilians killed during the War of the Thorns, are now languishing in torment in The Maw.

The veil between life and death is no more.

With a single act of destruction, Sylvanas Windrunner has ripped open the way to the afterlife. Azeroth’s staunchest defenders have been dragged into all-consuming darkness. An ancient force of death threatens to break its bonds and unravel reality.

Hidden realms of wonder and horror await any who would pass to the other side. The Shadowlands is home to an entire realm of the departed; it is a world between worlds whose delicate balance preserves life and death itself.

As one of Azeroth’s greatest champions, you have been granted the power to cross over in body and soul. Now you must investigate a conspiracy to unmake the cosmos, and help Warcraft legends journey back… or fulfill their ultimate destiny.

As adventurers arrive in the Shadowlands, they too will be sent straight to The Maw, but their innate connection to Azeroth will save them from an eternity of torment within The Maw. However, some of their allies will be left behind, while the adventurers are tasked with exploring the Shadowlands to understand the realm of the dead and hopefully becoming strong enough to return to The Maw and save their allies.

New Features

Leveled Up Leveling

World of Warcraft: Shadowlands will smooth out the leveling experience and better prepare new adventurers for what’s to come. Players will level up to 50 before heading to the Shadowlands (new level cap: 60).

The experience curve has been adjusted to make it faster than ever to prepare for the newest challenges, and each level along the way will provide more meaningful increases in progress and power. All expansion zones are getting more flexible, too; they’ll be able* to scale to you and your friends while you level to 50, so it’s easy to try a zone you’ve never played.

*You can still outlevel dungeons and crush them for transmogs or fulfillment.

A New Journey for New Players Levels (1-10) :

A new starter zone, Exile’s Reach, is being added. Located at the coast of Stormheim, Exile’s Reach will serve as a tutorial zone where new players will be taught the basics of WoW. Exile’s Reach will have a storyline of its own, ending up in a mini-dungeon that will teach the basics of dungeons in WoW.

  • New players will go through Exile’s Reach on their very first WoW playthrough.
  • Veteran players will be able to choose between going through Exile’s Reach or repeating their chosen race’s starting zone experience.
  • Demon Hunters, Death Knights, and Allied Races will start at level 8 and will play through their own starting experience instead of Exile’s Reach.
Pick Your Era Levels (10-50) :

Play the latest expansion, Battle for Azeroth, or follow Chromie back in time and tackle any other expansion you choose, with challenges that scale to characters level 10–50.

Enter the Shadowlands Levels(50-60) :

Step into Azeroth’s afterlife, and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with legends of the past as you fight to preserve the universe.

New zones

What lies beyond the world you know? The Shadowlands is resting place for every mortal soul. Virtuous or vile, hey all are sent to the afterlife. Journey through planes of torment and imprisonment to those of rebirth and eternal reward.

  • Bastion : Those who have lived a life of service are drawn to the Bastion to assume the highest duty of all, carrying souls to the shadowlands. Amongst Bastion’s gleaming spires and sweeping vistas await challenges to test the mettle of the steadfast kyrians.
  • Ardenweald : A vibrant afterlife for those closely connected to the wild, Ardenweald is a domain of endless restoration tended by the mystic night fae. Within this eternal forest, massive dream trees draw in precious anima (soul essence) to feed the spirits of nature awaiting rebirth.
  • Maldraxxus : Within war torn Maldraxxus, might (all of kinds) makes right. Here, in the birthplace of the necromantic magic, those who master the powers of death turn legions of ambitious souls into relentless undead armies.
  • Revendreth : A realm of looming keeps and gothic villages. Revendreth is the home to the venthyr, the harvesters of sins. The wretched souls who arrive here may find penance for their misdeeds, or merely indulge the appetites of their keepers.
  • The Maw : To be cast in to the Maw is to be doomed to a bleak eternity. It is a tumultuous, hopeless land where the vilest souls in the cosmos are imprisoned forever. Should the ancient evil chained here break free, all of reality will be consumed.

Align yourself with one of four Covenants mysterious sects, each with their own ambition for the Shadowlands to restore balance to the hereafter.

You’ll gain access to your Covenant’s Sanctum, where you will gain a lot of benefits. First you’ll accept unique quests. You will undertake a sprawling covenant campaign, and call upon your allies to embark on important missions. Then you’ll earn unique abilities based on your Covenant and class. Also you will acquire a unique mount and visual appearance. Even more you will forge bonds with powerful souls, drawing on their essence to further customize your skills.

  • Kyrian (zone Bastion) : Steadfast guardians who carry the souls of the dead.
  • Night Fae (zone Ardenwaeld) : Defenders of nature who uphold the cycle of rebirth.
  • Necrolord (zone Maldraxxus) : Necrotic soldiers who wage war throughout the cosmos.
  • Venthyr (zone Revendreth) : Eaters of sin who harvest anima from wicked souls.

Oribos, the eternal city

Our new player hub, Oribos is the arrival point for all souls who enter the Shadowlands. At this crossroads, the dead are judged by the impassive Arbiter before being sent to their final destinations, and Oribos’ denizens swap gossip and anima—soulstuff that serves as both power and currency.

Torghast, the tower of the damned


Once, the Jailer kept only the most dangerous souls in the cosmos confined in this eternal prison. Now, some of Azeroth’s greatest heroes are trapped here, and you’ll need to rescue them from the Jailer’s tower before he expends their very souls.

Torghast is an endlessly replayable, ever-changing dungeon that you can challenge alone or in a group. Your runs will differ each time, but you’ll need to explore cautiously. Death comes at a terrible cost. Defeat enough of Torghast’s unpredictable challenges, and you’ll be rewarded with unique abilities and items to ensure your present survival or bolster your next run. The further you progress, the greater your likelihood of retrieving materials to craft the legendary weapons and armor that will help you restore balance to the Shadowlands.

Other secrets lie within the tower… but they’re yet to be revealed.
